The first edition of Tibet in Harlem took place from March 1st - 7th, 2009, and was presented by Maysles Cinema, The Kham Film Project, Machik, and Robbie Barnett, Director of the Modern Tibetan Studies Program at Columbia University's Weatherhead East Asian Institute. The series showcased 15 films, including many rare and lesser-known works, as well as poetry readings, musical performances, panel discussions, and receptions. In addition to the screenings, Tibet in Harlem hosted an exhibition of paintings by contemporary Tibetan artists.

All proceeds from Tibet in Harlem were donated to non-profit organizations working in Tibet. Additional co-presenters included Machik, Asian Cinevision, Rabsal, Asia Society, and The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation.
